Whether you are a business owner, student, or simply want some high-quality photos of yourself, you might be ready to schedule your next headshot session. But what do you wear? How do you pose for the photos? I am going over it all today! Keep reading to find out how to prepare for your professional headshot session.

Know Your Purpose

You need to know your purpose for your headshot session. Think about what you will be using these photos for. This will help you with everything else on the list. Many of my clients use their headshots for multiple reasons. Maybe you will use some of the photos for your website and others for everyday social media use. When you know why you want them and what type of headshots you are looking for, this will create a cohesive session.

Gather Inspiration

Now that you have an idea of what you want your headshot session to be, it is time to gather inspiration. Create a board to share with your photographer on Pinterest! You will look at different pose ideas, styles, outfits, and settings. You will likely start seeing a specific common aesthetic when you start pinning.

What to Wear

Speaking of outfits, this is the number one question I am asked as a photographer, “What do I wear for my headshot session?” Ultimately, you need to wear outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. Pin some outfit ideas to your Pinterest board to help you as you shop or select items from your wardrobe.

Most of the time, you will be wearing 1-3 outfits for the average headshot session. Choose a balance of casual and professional outfits depending on your purpose for the session. If this is for your business, make sure you refer to your brand colors. Choose outfits that compliment your brand and add some of your brand tones to your looks. Make sure to bring fashionable and comfortable shoes. You will be on your feet and possibly walking for hours at a time.

For hair and makeup, you can choose to do this yourself or hire professionals. Choose a look that can transition through your different outfits and that feels true to you. I would recommend practicing your hair and makeup along with trying on your outfits beforehand. Snap some photos on your phone to get an idea of what they will look like on camera.

Determine Your Location

Where do you want your headshot session to be? Do you want your photos to be captured at a local coffee shop or at your business office? Maybe you would like to explore your local city. This will determine the look and pricing of your headshot session.

Talk to Your Photographer

The most important advice in this entire blog is to talk to your photographer! Every photographer’s method and pricing are different. They can offer advice and insight for your specific headshot needs.

If you are planning your own headshot session and love the photos on this blog along with my advice, let’s chat! I would love to hear about your vision for your headshots.
