One of my favorite details to capture as a photographer is stationery. I love how an invitation suite can provide insight into the day. Plus, it’s always such an exciting moment to receive a save the date in the mail for a future event! Creating the perfect flat lay takes time, but is so worth it.
There is so much opportunity to get creative and add in other aspects from the event design. From wedding rings to fresh florals, images of stationery can provide a sense of nostalgia even after the day is over. Whether you are a beginner photographer or are a future bride, today I am sharing my favorite flat lay styling tips.
Ask For a Full Set of Stationery in Advance
Always be prepared! If you are a photographer, ask for the entire stationery set prior to a wedding or event. Otherwise, you may not have every piece needed for your flat lay. Then, you can capture your images as needed without worry. This is also an opportunity to plan your design in advance if needed.
Couple’s, when you are ordering your stationery suite, be sure to include a few extras for photography. You might even feature some pieces of your invitation design within your decor. They will become your keepsakes as well to remember your day!
Create Dimension
Dimension is so important for a flat lay image. You will want to distinguish between each piece naturally, so invest in some risers. They are ready to use and create a professional appearance. You will be impressed with the difference these can make! Especially with stationery sets that are similar in tone or shape, you will be able to easily highlight each piece.
Add Layers
With every design, layers make all the difference. Stationery flat lay photography is no exception. Layer the different paper shapes and textures to make everything more visually appealing. You can even layer your props, using the different floral shapes or fabrics for extra interest. Try out different options to see what works best for each stationery set!
Maintain Color & Detail Integrity
Stationery takes a lot of time and effort to create. Couples planning their wedding might have multiple meetings and mock prints before selecting their ideal design. When capturing your images, focus on maintaining the true color and detail of the stationery. Each photo should clearly display the design as it appears in person.
Use Props Wisely
It’s so fun to add in props like florals from the bridal bouquet or samples of the wedding linen fabric. Be sure your props make sense with your flat lay. If an item wouldn’t be with the stationery, don’t add it in! It will stand out and throw off the balance of the design. Think about the vision for the day while keeping the colors and details of the stationery in mind.
